Northwich Fastest Veteran Crew in the North of England

The North of England Head of the River Race was held on 14th March on the River Dee in Chester and Northwich RC clocked up 3 wins.

In blustery, but dry conditions the Veteran D crew of Bob Jepson, Simon Crouchley, Geoff Simms, Ray Smith, George Perrin, Paul Clay, Mathew Hackett, Doug Pickup and cox Jonty Moore won their event and were once again the fastest Veteran Men's boat with a time of 17:58.

Jonty went on to a further win in Division 2 where he coxed the Women's Veteran B/C Novice crew to victory. In the crew were Elaine Hemsted, Susan Easton, Clare Holt, Angela Message, Josie Bell, Louise Cross, Liz Kennedy and Cheryl Williams. For these rowers, all 'graduates' of the club's Learn to Row scheme, this represented their first or second race.

In this division the WJ15 coxed quad of Anna Cosgrove, Lizzie Bennet, Chloe Weston, Rebecca Jones and cox Andrew Morrison beat Kings School, Merchant Taylors school and 2 crews from Yarm School in a fast time of 20.27 for the third win of the day.

Two Crews Compete at the Womens' Head of the River race in London

Northwich Rowing Club combined forces with the Grange School Hartford and sent two womens' eights to the WEHORR on Saturday 7th March.

This event is raced over 4.25 miles between Mortlake and Putney - the same course as the Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race but in the opposite direction!

Northwich A: Sarah Hewett (Grange), Clare Briegal, Georgia Hogg (Grange), Nicola Watts, Alison Reed, Carole Riddell, Lydia Barstow, Harriet Tindale (Grange) & Cox Jonty Moore, finished 158 in a time of 21:43.

Northwich B: a crew of Junior Novice rowers from the club, Mary Hunt, Rhianne Wynne, Amy Fallon, Clare Campbell, Ellie Preece, Jane Edwards, Lorna O'Farrell, Lucy Joynson & Cox Andrew Morrison, finished 260, with time 23:24.

Two Vet Wins at Runcorn Spring Head

Northwich Rowing Club were out in force at the Runcorn Head of the River on 20th February. Facing rough conditions and a strong head wind on the River Weaver the club notched up another two wins. The first came from the men's veteran E eight of Nev Hand, Steve Wignall, Simon Bannister, Mike Francis, Andrew Simpson, Tom Kilkenny, Brian Roberts, Ian Silk and cox Josh Briegal recording a time of 24 minutes 51 seconds.

A second men's veteran crew racing took the veteran D title in an impressive time of 22 minutes 39 seconds - the fastest veteran crew of the day. The crew of Robert Jepson, Simon Crouchley, Geoff Sims, Andy Mallins, George Perrin, Paul Clay, PR Holland Lloyd, Doug Pickup and cox Jonty Moore fought tough competition in their category to take the honours.

Other crews from the club narrowly missed out on a medal with the women's senior three eight recording the second fastest time of the day of 26 minutes and 28 seconds. The crew of Sarah Hewett, Clare Briegal, Georgia Hogg, Nicola Watts, Rhianne Wynne, Carole Riddell, Lydia Barstow, Harriet Tindale and cox Jonty Moore gave a promising performance from the squad who will be racing on the Tideway in two weeks. The Men's Junior quad also had a good performance coming second to Queen's Park High School, Chester.

Fundraiser for NRC and supporting Pauline Cordingley, Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro Sept 09, in aid of Ronald McDonald House, Alder Hey Children's Hospital.

Gold medal for J18 team and two silver medals for NRC at EIRC

On Sunday 8th February at the English Indoor Rowing Championships, Northwich members came home with two individual silver medals and one team gold.

Early in the day Elaine Young came second in her lightweight women's category. Then Peter Tolson put in a fantastic effort in the J18 heavyweight category. He was leading at the 1500m mark but was pipped at the post. His 2k time was 6:54.4. Well done Peter!

The J18 boys team (Tom Curwell, George Clarke, Jack Palmer with sub Lee Harrison (Stoke RA) then captured the gold - the perfect end to a great day's racing! J18 team coach Jed Barlow was delighted with the results.

Capsize Drill
